While it isn\u2019t designed for construction, it\u2019s made to work for a wide range of businesses.<\/p>\n<p>So contractors can still benefit from using QuickBooks for construction. How much, of course, depends. More extensive job costing, specialized billing and complex payroll can mean contractors eventually experience some limitations. When asked why they implemented an ERP system, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.retaininternational.com\/blog\/54-erp-statistics-and-trends-you-need-know\">40% of companies<\/a> said they wanted better functionality.<\/p>\n<p>That said, here\u2019s why we can recommend QuickBooks for contractors.<\/p>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/job-costing-ultimate-guide\/\" class=\"blog-cta-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/FSL-blog-post-ad-ultimate-guide.png\" alt=\"UG to Job Costing\" title=\"UG to Job Costing\"><\/a>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_You_Can_Start_out_on_QuickBooks_for_Construction\"><\/span>1. You Can Start out on QuickBooks for Construction<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>To begin with, whether you\u2019re an established GC transitioning off spreadsheets or a roofer launching out on your own, QuickBooks gives you options. That can be perfect if you&#8217;re really just looking to get your accounting jumpstarted as you&#8217;re working toward growth. QuickBooks Online \u201cSelf Employed\u201d edition, for example, lets a single user:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>import and track transactions,<\/li>\n<li>invoice and accept payments, and<\/li>\n<li>run basic reports like P&amp;Ls and cash flows.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With small business editions like \u201cEssentials\u201d and \u201cPlus\u201d \u2014 plus payroll add-ons \u2014 you can get numerous other important features too. So there&#8217;s room to grow before moving into a true job cost accounting system with other software.<\/p>\n<p>For starting out, QuickBooks Online Plus gives you up to five named users. So each user has their own separate login credentials. Notice, that\u2019s different from a \u201cconcurrent user,\u201d where you might have 15 people with logins but only so many can be logged in at once. If needed, you can always purchase more users \u2014 currently up to 25.<\/p>\n<p>Upgrading between QuickBooks Online editions is easy too \u2014 first, because it\u2019s cloud-based. That means no downloads or installations to use the app on your desktop. Because QuickBooks Online doesn\u2019t currently require a contract, you\u2019re free to switch plans at any time. In most cases, you should be able to purchase a higher-level plan right from inside the application.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Its_Easy-to-Use_Accounting_Software\"><\/span>2. It&#8217;s Easy-to-Use Accounting Software<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>One of the biggest appeals of <a href=\"\/software\/quickbooks\/\">QuickBooks for contractors<\/a> is that it can be really simple to use. Of course, that does depends on the depth of features and options you have available. That said, basic invoice entry can be extremely straightforward, and connecting your QuickBooks account to bank accounts can make importing transactions easy. Some customization options also let you tailor major reports so you can play around and save them for later.<\/p>\n<p>What this amounts to is that you don\u2019t need to have a strong accounting background to use QuickBooks pretty effectively. Don\u2019t know your \u201ccredits\u201d from your \u201cdebits\u201d? That\u2019s OK. Like a lot of accounting software, the simple entry screens take care of most of that for you. Short of delving into some of the more advanced features, like adjusting journal entries or integrating third-party apps, you shouldn\u2019t need a lot of prior knowledge to get a minimum value.<\/p>\n<div id=\"for-more-box\">\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Their_Accounting_Software_Support_is_Quality\"><\/span>3. Their Accounting Software Support is Quality<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Another great help for contractors is that QuickBooks\u2019 support is as consistently well-rated as anyone\u2019s. Users have several options, including calling for direct phone support. You can also check with a library of online resources or post your question to the QuickBooks online community.<\/p>\n<p>And because QuickBooks has a large user community in different industries beyond construction, many users have also created their own support resources. You can find countless websites and YouTube videos for a quick overview or an unofficial how-to guide.<\/p>\n<div id=\"for-more-box\">\n<div id=\"for-more-box\">\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_You_Get_Cloud_Accounting\"><\/span>4. You Get Cloud Accounting<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Recently, QuickBooks has been moving its users to an entirely <a href=\"\/hosted-demo\/\">cloud-based accounting application<\/a>. That means you can access it anywhere you have an Internet connection. That can be your desktop in the office, or it can be the brand-new laptop you just bought. With cloud software, there are no downloads or installations.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the other benefit with the cloud is that backups are handled for you automatically, and the servers that your software runs on are professionally secured. Contractors can definitely feel good about that.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_You_Can_Try_Free_Accounting_Software\"><\/span>5. You Can Try Free Accounting Software<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Finally, there\u2019s one last benefit of QuickBooks for newer construction businesses worth mentioning. Right now, <em>it\u2019s free accounting software for contractors.<\/em> At least, it\u2019s free for a <a href=\"https:\/\/quickbooks.intuit.com\/pricing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">30-day trial<\/a>. Of course, while 30 days might not really be enough to transact business, it might give you enough of a feel to decide whether you\u2019d want to pay to try it out further.
