They needed accounting software for construction.<\/p>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/job-costing-ultimate-guide\/\" class=\"blog-cta-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/FSL-blog-post-ad-ultimate-guide.png\" alt=\"UG to Job Costing\" title=\"UG to Job Costing\"><\/a>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"One_Step_at_a_Time\"><\/span>One Step at a Time<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Berks County, Pennsylvania contractor started out doing primarily highway work. An <a href=\"\/software\/quickbooks\/\">off-the-shelf accounting program<\/a> served their needs for a little while, according to administrator Charlene Barwis. But as the company\u2019s business grew to include site development, transportation, utility installation and design build, they needed several different systems to report accounts receivable, accounts payable and job costing. The biggest problem, however, was <a href=\"\/software\/payroll\/\">payroll<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>State work was becoming increasingly confusing, says Charlene. \u201cWe had to manually adjust prevailing wage rates per employee, because each employee had a different fringe benefit. It became increasingly difficult and time consuming.\u201d In addition, they were needing to fill out certified payrolls by hand and compute the complex calculations on their own.<\/p>\n<p>If they had to address anything first, it was this, and their small business accounting system at the time wasn\u2019t helping. Charlene began looking into services to alleviate these issues and soon discovered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.payroll4construction.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Payroll4Construction.com<\/a>, a payroll service designed specifically for contractors.<\/p>\n<p>Barwis went live with Payroll4Construction.com in March 2016 and breathed easier as their payroll was entered and taken care of by an outside source that knew the industry requirements and could begin to help with job costing.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Next_Big_Step_Construction_Accounting_Software\"><\/span>The Next Big Step: Construction Accounting Software<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Although they found their books on the right path to organization and accuracy with payroll taken care of, office manager Dawn Barzd says there was still some tightening to take place elsewhere. \u201cThere were tons of headaches,\u201d she explains. They needed a better method of carrying through <a href=\"\/software\/job-costing\/\">job costing<\/a> beyond just their payroll. \u201cWe were doing it,\u201d says Dawn, \u201cbut we were taking information from invoices and putting it into Excel. Things weren\u2019t going to the right jobs, things were missing . . . it was all very messy.\u201d Then there was all the specialized billing and reporting they were having to do outside of their accounting system as well. They were ready for the next step: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foundationsoft.com\/\">construction accounting software<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when they decided Payroll4Construction.com\u2019s sister company, Foundation Software, could really tend to their other needs. Barwis went live with FOUNDATION\u00ae construction accounting software in January 2017. Like the transition to Payroll4Construction.com, Dawn says, it was very smooth moving to FOUNDATION.<\/p>\n<p>Since the implementation, the company has been running efficiently and more organized. \u201cWe\u2019re happy to have FOUNDATION because they know costing and construction,\u201d says Dawn. \u201cAnd, Payroll4Construction.com is great because we can track employees on a certain job, on a certain day, and for how long. That\u2019s extremely helpful for unemployment compensation.\u201d Sure, construction payroll is now easier to manage with FOUNDATION than it ever was on their old accounting system. But having experienced how well the two companies work together for them, Barwis isn\u2019t looking back.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Taking_the_Path_Forward\"><\/span>Taking the Path Forward<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Barwis Construction knows that committing to success is a long road. And they\u2019re happy with how the journey has gone so far. There was no shortage of calls made in those early months as they learned the software, Charlene remembers with a laugh, but \u201cthe support team is tremendous \u2014 very patient.\u201d As Dawn recalls the implementation process, she adds their trainer was \u201camazing\u201d and always responded to emails within an hour.<\/p>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/demo-video-player\/\" class=\"blog-cta-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/FSL-blog-post-ad-fsl-in-action.png\" alt=\"Watch a Demo\" title=\"Watch a Demo\"><\/a>\n<p>Dawn and Charlene learned immediately to take advantage of the continuous support and training that Foundation offers its clients. Even after the many beginning support calls, they can always learn more, plus get a refresher course. \u201cIn fact,\u201d Dawn explains, \u201cI\u2019m signed up for a webinar this month on <a href=\"\/software\/unit-price-billing\/\">Unit Price Billing<\/a>.
